WHAT IS
PITSENG TRUST?
A women's funding organisation founded by
women
from historically subordinated communities of South
Africa.
Established in 1998 in response to the need for an
alternative
approach to funding women for their total
emancipation.
ABOUT THE NAME
Say
"Pitseng" and the image that one evokes is the traditional tri-legged pot used
by women to cook food. Such food is, most times, made from simple and scarce
ingredients. Yet, entire communities survive on it! Thus
Pitseng is a symbol
of strength and survival - of life itself which transfigures its stereotype as a sign of
women's subordination. Ingenuity, intellect, resourcefulness,
commitment-these are the other ingredients women
throw everyday "into
the pot of life".
Pitseng, a Sesotho/Setswana word that means a
pot, literally speaking.
PITSENG represents the collective energy
and recreative potential of women to transform their lives, their country
-
to move
between the domestic hearth and the wide socio-economic and political world
where they belong and which belongs to them.
We have adopted our name
PITSENG in affirmation of
women's daily life supporting
activities.
